Water sports’ battle for Hamilton Lake space could lead to confrontation

Hamilton’s yachting and waka ama communities are struggling for space around Hamilton Lake.

There’s tension at Hamilton’s Lake Rotoroa as sporting codes vie for space on and around the water.

It’s a training spot for sailors, waka ama paddlers, dragon boaters and kayakers. And many all want to enter the lake from the same point.

Hamilton Yacht Club predicts confrontations if that doesn’t change, as water sports keep growing.

“We’re trying to put [all the water sports] within 50 metres. It’s not compatible,” Hamilton Yacht Club commodore Roger Gordon told councillors.

The frustrations came to light through submissions on Hamilton City Council’s Draft Lake Domain Management Plan, which includes plans to consider a water-sports hub on Innes Common.
