UW opponent first look: New California coach Justin Wilcox returns to Husky Stadium

Former Seattle-area prep stars Ross Bowers and Devante Downs lead California (3-2, 2-0 Pac-12), which is a 26-point underdog in Saturday’s game against No. 6 Washington at Husky Stadium.

First glance: No. 6 Washington Huskies (5-0, 2-0) vs. California Golden Bears (3-2, 0-2).

When/Where: 7:45 p.m. PT Saturday at Husky Stadium.

TV/Radio: ESPN/1000 AM, 97.7 FM.

Last week: Cal suffered its second straight defeat, a 45-24 loss at Oregon.

Last meeting: Washington dismantled Cal 66-27 on Nov. 5, 2016 at Memorial Stadium. UW quarterback Jake Browning finished 19 for 28 for 378 yards with six touchdowns. WRs John Ross III (six catches for a career-high 208 yards) and Dante Pettis (eight catches for 104 yards) each caught three TDs passes.

Coach: Justin Wilcox, 40, is in his first year after taking over a Cal team that was 5-7 last year. He began his coaching career in 2001 as a graduate assistant at Boise State the same year Chris Petersen started as the Broncos offensive coordinator. When Petersen was promoted to head coach in 2006, he hired Wilcox to be the defensive coordinator. Wilcox stayed four seasons before moving on to Tennessee (2010-11), Washington (2012-13), USC (2014-14) and Wisconsin (2016). Former Eastern Washington coach Beau Baldwin is Cal’s offensive coordinator and former UW star Marques Tuiasosopo is the quarterback coach.

QB Ross Bowers (6-2, 200, R-S0.) led Bothell High to an undefeated 14-0 record, including a 24-14 victory over Chiawana of Pasco to claim the Class 4A state title as a senior in 2014. He redshirted in 2015 and didn’t register a pass in 2016. Bowers has started every game this season. He’s completed 55.4 percent of his passes for 1,357 yards, 9 TDs and 8 INTs.
