The 7 Southern California artists you can’t miss

When FYF Fest started in 2004 it was just a collection of small punk shows featuring local bands at a couple of venues in Echo Park. But this once-humble little local show has grown immensely in the past few years, moving to the Los Angeles State Historic Park in 2009 before outgrowing that location and moving to Exposition Park in 2014.

Now it’s even bigger as it expands to a three-day event, with more than 65 acts on the bill performing on six stages at Exposition Park from Friday, July 21, to Sunday, July 23.

And the growth has been a natural progression, festival organizers say.

“Our audience has grown and we’ve grown as well. There were so many great artists on the bill we had to spread it into three days. We didn’t want to cram it all in two days and we wouldn’t have added a day if we didn’t have the talent lineup for it,” said Dave Peterson, one of the festival producers.

Peterson said they are expecting almost 40,000 people per day at the festival.

And while it has grown into a major music festival with a diverse lineup that includes top musical acts like headliners Frank Ocean, Nine Inch Nails, Missy Elliot and Björk, there’s still a place at FYF for the locals.

“We work with bands year round. We do over 120 shows in the L.A. area every year so we’re constantly working with bands that play all the time in L.A.,” Peterson said, referring to FYF Presents.

“We always love being able to produce a festival where there are all of these areas where you can discover new artists, even for the people going for some of the big bands,” he said.

And with that in mind here are few of those local acts performing at FYF Fest who are expected to deliver memorable sets worthy of a major festival.
