Snohomish stays inside with Kyra Beckman to survive Edmond-Woodway’s three-point barrage

The 6-foot-2 post had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers to offset the 14 three-pointers by the Warriors in a 66-64 win.

The Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team continued to rain three-pointers, but Snohomish didn’t panic.

The Panthers had a plan. And her name was Kyra Beckman.

The junior post scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help offset 14 three-pointers by Edmonds-Woodway as No. 8 Snohomish hung on to defeat the Warriors 66-64 in a showdown of two top teams in Wesco 3A Friday night at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

“We knew that they were a pretty good team that can shoot,” Beckman said. “They just have really good players and we knew it was going to be a tight game. Our game plan was to get it into the post … and we could pass it out to our shooters, who were on fire too.”

The 6-foot-2 Beckman was crucial for Snohomish against the Warriors, who have one player generously listed at 6-foot on their roster. The Panthers fed the ball into Beckman and Courtney Perry as Edmonds-Woodway countered with its perimeter shooting.

“Both teams, I thought, played well,” said Snohomish coach Ken Roberts. “ … We’re a little bigger, but not quite as quick. Both teams (were) fighting to try to get the game to be played the way they’d like. It’s tough for us to stop each other.”

Snohomish (12-2, 6-0 Wesco) led most of the way but the Warriors made it interesting down the stretch. Edmonds-Woodway (12-2, 5-1) netted nine threes in the second half to erase a nine-point Panthers advantage and get to within two.

“I’ve seen them play and I told our girls, ‘They’ve got seven kids that can shoot,’ ” Roberts said. “The only good thing is they can’t all be on the floor at the same time.”
