One Dead, Several Injured After Car Plows Into Pedestrians at White Nationalist Rally: ‘I Am Heartbroken’

A car plowed into protestors, killing one, and injuring multiple others at a white nationalist rally in Virginia on Saturday.

Video captured and posted to Twitter of the incident shows a vehicle drive straight into a crowd of people as bystanders can be heard screaming. The car, which had a damaged hood, then reverses back out the same way it came.

At least one person was killed in the collision, Charlottesville Mayor Mike Singer said on Twitter.

”I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here,” Singer wrote. “I urge all people of good will — go home.”

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told Fox News that the car seen in the Twitter video had been located. Two other vehicles were reportedly involved in the collision.

There was no official word on the number of injuries, but multiple sources reported at least a dozen.

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to reports.

White nationalists were clashing with counter-protesters at the “Unite the Right” rally hours before the collision in downtown Charlottesville, CBS reported.

White supremacists and alt-right activists and planned to protest the city’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from Emancipation Park, reports said.

Earlier Saturday, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency as violence escalated between rally supporters and counter-protesters.

“It is now clear that public safety cannot be safeguarded without additional powers, and that the mostly out-of-state protesters have come to Virginia to endanger our citizens and property,” McAuliffe said in a statement. “I am disgusted by the hatred, bigotry and violence these protesters have brought to our state over the past 24 hours.”
