Hallsville event helps Scouting tragedy victims, families – Longview News-Journal

HALLSVILLE — A sea of purple flooded Hallsville City Park park Saturday as residents turned out to an event to help the families of three Scouts who died in a boating accident at Lake O’ the Pines.

The event, dubbed Hallsville Loves Day, was the idea of of Shivers Natural Snow owner Rachael Reeves. She said the goal was to show love and support — financially and emotionally — to the families of 11-year-old Boy Scout Thomas Larry, and Eagle Scouts Heath Faucheux, 16, and Will Brannon, 17.

“It’s one of those things where we heard about the tragedy, and our hearts just went out to the families, and we just wanted to give back the best and only way we knew how to give back,” said Reeves’ husband, Chad. “It was Rachael’s idea. She said, ‘Let’s just do that. Let’s open up and give 100 percent of (the sales) away.’ We wanted to do it.”

Brannon, son of Hallsville-based Troop 620 Scoutmaster Stan Brannon, and Faucheux, whose father is Assistant Scoutmaster Dion Faucheux, died at the scene Aug. 5 when the mast of the sailboat they were on struck a power line at Lake O’ the Pines, electrocuting them. Thomas died from his injuries Monday in LSU Health Shreveport Medical Center.

A total of 40 businesses joined in Saturday’s fundraising effort by pledging to donate either all or a portion of their sales to scholarship funds organized in memory of the three Scouts. Funds raised also will benefit their families.

“Hallsville’s just a close-knit community, so anytime something like this happens, we got to come together and show support,” said John O’Pry, who came out Saturday to Shivers. “It doesn’t matter if you know the family or not, everybody knows somebody that’s lost a loved one, and you know, you’ve got to do what you can, so that’s why I’m out here today.”

Marylyn Diffey of Hallsville said she was there to support her fellow residents.

“Hallsville is a good community, really,” she said, adding she brought her daughter, grandchildren and niece with her.
