A first round featuring 10 pars and two birdies propelled Greenwich High School graduate Alexandra Sazhin into a first-place tie following the first round of the 52nd Connecticut Women’s Amateur Championship Monday at Manchester Country Club.
Sazhin, who graduated from Greenwich High in 2015, is tied atop the leaderboard with Autumn Serruta of Golf Club of Avon at 4-over-par 76. Sarah Houle (Rock Ridge Country Club) and Anelise Browne of Westport (Rolling Hills Country Club) are each one shot off the pace at 5-over-par 77.
Sazhin, Serruta and Browne, a 2016 Staples High School graduate, tee off at 9:10 a.m. in Tuesday’s second round. The CSGA Connecticut Women’s Amateur includes 54 holes of stroke play.
A member of the Quinnipiac University women’s golf team, where she earned MAAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, Sazhin shot a 38 on both the front and back nine on Monday. Her birdies came on the par 4, 320-yard seventh hole and the par 4, 299-yard 10th hole.
While at Greenwich High, Sazhin helped lead the Cardinals to three FCIAC championships and was a three-time All-State Team selection. She is representing Golf Performance Center in Ridgefield in the tournament. Houle’s round included three birdies and 10 pars, while Browne (member of Franklin & Marshall Women’s golf team) holed two birdie putts and parred 10 holes.
Faith Garcia of Tashua Knolls Golf Club shot an 8-over 80, while Noel Nora Nolan (Shorehaven Golf Club) carded an 84. Besides being one shot off the pace overall, Houle leads the 17-and-under flight by seven shots. Johnson and Holland are tied for the lead in the Senior flight (50-59 year-old) and Lynda Foster leads the Super Senior flight (60-and-over) with an 89.
