Former Angels great Rod Carew recovering from successful heart and kidney transplant

Rod Carew is recovering from what doctors called a succesful operation in which he received a new heart and kidney, according to the American Heart Association.

The Hall of Famer underwent a 13-hour procedure from Thursday night until early Friday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Doctors told Carew’s family they were pleased with the operation, the AHA reported.

“We are overwhelmed with emotions right now – joy, relief, excitement and especially gratitude for all the doctors and nurses who have been with us at every step in this journey, and to the donor who made this possible,” Carew’s wife Rhonda told the AHA. “Rod knows he’s been given another chance at life and we look forward to making the most of it.”
