Distington snatch victory from Ellenborough in the dying seconds of the Amateur Cup final

The last final of the Cumberland ARL season did not disappoint as Distington just edged out rivals Ellenborough to lift the EB Lamb Amateur Cup.

A score right at the death proved the difference between the two sides as Distington snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the clash, played at Seaton ARLFC.

It took only seven minutes for Ellenborough to get on the score sheet, when Rhys Burr made a nice break in his own 25 and sprinted down field.

After drawing in the defenders he timed his pass to Kevin Hoban perfectly and he raced over the line unopposed, Michael Hill added the extras to give Ellenborough a six-point lead.

With 15 minutes on the clock came the try of the game when Distington were camped on the Ellenborough line.

On the last tackle a kick was put across field and gathered by young Ellenborough winger Zac Olstrum, who managed to step out of two tackles and gallop practically the length of the field to score a brilliant individual try.

The resulting kick was just wide but Ellenborough had a nice 10 point cushion.

Ellenborough were looking the sharper of the two teams, and taking everything that Distington threw at them.

Jonny Stoddart and Phil Flavell were immense in their tackling, and the backs showed plenty of pace when they got the chance to run.

Likewise Distington’s Bryan and Kieran Ritchie were solid in their defence.

On 30 minutes Distington’s Will Ritchie found himself dispatched to the sin bin following an altercation involving several players, and although Ellenborough failed to capitalise on the extra man, they ended the half with a 10-0 lead.

Ellenborough came out in the second half as keenly as the first, and within three minutes had extended their lead to 14 points, when Michael Hill put in a lovely cross-field kick for Zac Olstrum who lunged over the line for his second of the day.
