Freshman qualified with 92 in sectional play in Chillicothe Monday. State tourney at Columbia Oct. 9-10
CHILLICOTHE, Mo. — In a heartbreaking finish, only one member of the 2017 Chillicothe High School golf Lady Hornets – Hallie Jones – qualified for next week’s Class 1 state tournament at the Columbia Country Club by finishing among the top 12 non-team-qualifying players in yesterday’s sectional tournament played on Chillicothe’s Green Hills Golf Course.
The Lady Hornets had a full, 5-players lineup in yesterday’s competition, increasing its odds of qualifying multiple players for state for the first time since 2010 when Maycee Hoover joined eventual 3-times All-Stater Liz Sivill on her second of three trips to the 36-holes state event.
CHS nearly made those improved odds pay off as Jones carded an 18-holes score of 92 and Hannah Haakonstad a 102. The “cut line” for individual qualification for state from the tournament here turned out to be 101, set when one player in the last group to finish had a score of 100. That left Haakonstad on the outside, looking in, with the 13th-best score among individuals not on one of the two qualifying teams.
Participating, as well, for Chillicothe were Lexi Hargrave with a 106, Maddie Lamp with a 114, and Jensen Simmer with a 111.
The team state qualifiers from yesterday’s high school girls’ golf were the squads from Macon (370) and Mexico (381).
The medalist for the tournament was Macon’s Paige Hawkins with a 79, 7-over par.
Hamilton’s Samantha Cornelius was the only non-Chillicothean among C-T-area participants to move on to state. She took second place with an 81.
CHS freshman Jones, according to a family member who followed her around, generally played steadily with about a half-dozen pars. However, she had one hole which could have submarined her round – taking an 11 on it, but she managed to shrug off any frustration with that “blip,” refocused, and came back to score well…
