Preliminary findings of an internal investigation allege there may have been a cover-up regarding the Summit Township Elementary water scandal.
Butler Area School District leaders addressed the accusations at a school board meeting Monday night, the same meeting where Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary A. Wolf’s resignation was approved in a 6-3 vote.
The internal investigation conducted by Michael J. Witherel, Esquire, of Witherel & Associates found potential misconduct among several employees. The misconduct may have included deleted emails and employees lying under oath.
Witherel, according to the district, was hired to investigate the district’s response to a DEP email dated September 27, 2016. The email contained information about the water test results at Summit Elementary School.
The investigation gave Witherel access to records, emails, water test results, personnel records, and correspondence and facility records. He also interviewed nine district employees.
When investigation expanded to include possible misconduct by employees, the district stated Witherel found “alleged failure to perform their respective job responsibilities, alleged unauthorized access to the district’s email system, alleged unauthorized retrieval and removal of emails, including board members, legal counsel and others; and, their alleged making of false statements under oath and during the investigation.”
The findings led to the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley, Director of Facilities Glenn Terwilliger and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary Wolf.
More information about the internal investigation is not being released at the request of the district attorney who is conducting a criminal investigation.
