“Get rid of the file system” is an audacious statement to say the least. Eliminating a 50 year-old pillar of computing technology? In a simple word—yes! The file system was designed back when managing half a megabyte of data was considered high tech.
By using the Oracle database in unique and unprecedented ways, AsterionDB has transformed the outdated, insecure, and traditional file system and with it the static file names that are easily exploited by hackers, viruses, and ransomware.
To do so AsterionDB had to solve the conundrum of how to store structured (defined data such as dates, names, and IDs) and unstructured data (such as rich media) together in the same architecture. But there’s more to it than that; a comprehensive solution must also be able to work with the unstructured data natively at the data layer.
To that end AsterionDB has patented the technology enabling the streaming of unstructured data from databases. It is now possible, for example, to stream high definition video directly from a database instance in the Oracle Cloud or even on premises. In addition, AsterionDB has created a file-system gateway that eliminates static filenames by generating unique filenames on-the-fly which can then be referenced either internally within the database or externally as needed.
