Andrew Garfield needs to be hired as a permanent seat-filler at award shows.
The actor and Oscar nominee has been making headlines all award season but not for picking up trophies for his role in Hacksaw Ridge. (Sorry, Andrew.) No, instead people are taking notice of what a supportive friend and ex-boyfriend he’s been to Emma Stone this award season. Sunday night at the 89th Academy Awards was no different, as he was spotted being visibly moved during her acceptance speech for Best Actress.
Eagle-eyed viewers caught a teary-eyed Andrew in the audience watching Emma speak about her achievement. (She won for her role as Mia in La La Land.) Of course, this isn’t the first time the actor has proved incredibly supportive and proud of his ex. During the Golden Globes last month, viewers realized that he had given her a standing ovation as she walked to the stage to accept her award.
He’s also previously spoken with Vanity Fair about being Emma’s “biggest fan as an artist.”
“I’m constantly inspired by her work,” he said. “I’m constantly inspired by how she handles and holds herself. So for me, I’ve—it’s been bliss to be able to watch her success and watch her bloom into the actress that she is. And it’s also been wonderful to have that kind of support for each other. It’s nothing but a beautiful thing.”
Basically, Andrew and Emma have made ex-goals cuter than relationship goals.
During her acceptance speech, Emma even gave her friends (and we’re sure Andrew is on that list) a shoutout, saying, “Along with my friends, who I love so much. I’m going to hug the hell out of you when the feeling re-enters my body.” And coincidentally, the Internet noticed later in the evening Andrew hugged Emma and her brother (who was her date at the event).
Emma and Andrew—who met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man—dated for four years, before splitting in 2015. But, we can’t lie, we love them just as much apart as we did together.
