In addition to the usual music and fashion excitement, there were also tears and a few words of protest during the American Music Awards on Sunday night.

Unlike the Grammys, which are awarded by members of the Recording Academy, the AMAs are determined by a poll of music buyers and fans. Here are six highlights from Sunday’s ceremony:

1. Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson accepted the Top Soundtrack award for “Purple Rain” on behalf of her brother, who died of an opioid overdose earlier this year.
