Chevy already showed off the 2019 Silverado 1500 last year, but tonight at a pre-Detroit Auto Show event, we’ve learned a lot more about this truck. The big news? An all-new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six (!), a 10-speed automatic, and around 450 lbs of weight savings thanks to more extensive use of aluminum.
Chevy is using aluminum for the hood, doors, and tailgate to help keep the Silverado’s weight down, despite an increase in all dimensions. But don’t think Chevy’s going all F-150 on us here – the Silverado still gets a steel bed. Specifically, a bed made of roll-formed high-strength steel that’s wider and longer than that of its predecessor. GM product chief Mark Reuss says the Silverado offers the biggest bed in its class in every configuration, and adding to the bed’s practicality is a power-operated tailgate.
Reuss didn’t offer any specifics for the Silverado’s new diesel six-cylinder, but he promised that its specs would best that of the recently-introduced Ford F-150 diesel. The Silverado’s 5.3- and 6.2-liter small-block V8s will be heavily updated too, featuring a fuel-saving tech that can turn off up to seven – seven! – cylinders at once. Both the 3.0-liter diesel and 6.2-liter V8 engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the same unit offered in the Camaro ZL1, and on the Silverado’s chief rival, the F-150.
Chevy is offering the Silverado with eight different trim levels, but the one we’re most interested in is the Trail Boss. That truck gets a two-inch lift and the Z71 off-road package, which brings a locking rear differential, Rancho shocks, skid plates, and more aggressive tires. It sounds (and looks) cool, but we’re still hoping Chevy’s got a more-hardcore ZR2 up its sleeve.
